Reiner X Reader- Too Late part 3
A man put his hand over his eyes. A sliver tear slipped down his cheek.
Why did it have to be you? Why was I so weak? How could I have done that?
He grits his teeth and wipes that hand down his face. He turns his head toward the full moon above his head. Was it worth it? Was it worth her life? The man can't help but wonder. Was his mission worth killing the one he really loved? Sending her to an early grave, by his own hand, and lying on the way, so she will never know the truth. Was it worth it?
He will know soon enough. When his own mission goes through and either succeeds or fails. But he will never, forget you.
The man remembers. Always will. Unto death, he will remember your face. The way your hair shone in the sun. The guilt he felt when he told you he loved you; knowing that he was deceiving you. But he will remember your smile. The way your eyes shone whenever you looked at him.
He loved you. But for himself, he lied to you. For my own bloody gain. For this mission. I couldn't let you know what I was up to; you were the only one in this important position. I couldn't tell you any different. I had to play my part. Did what you expected of me, but tried to stay far enough away from you so that neither of us got hurt too badly. It didn't work. Both of us got stabbed in the back.
A sob threatened to escape his mouth, but he clamped down on it, and let his body shake with unvoiced pain. How he loved you... Yearned to tell you that. But he couldn't, because he remembers...
Remembers your sweet scent. Remembers the curve of your back. Remembers your joy. Your sadness. Your love. Affection. Kindness. He remembers who you liked, and who you didn't. He remembers how much you loved listening to orchestras even though you didn't say anything. He remembers the bump on your nose. Your brilliant and intelligent eyes. Your melodious laugh. Your... Everything.
He loves you, but he remembers... Remembers the look in your eyes as you bequeathed him your last, unspoken, parting words:
I hate you, Reiner Braun.
He could never tell you that he loved you now... You wouldn't accept it now. He lost his chance long ago.
He was simply, too late.
